Advances in Economics
(invited lectures)

General Presentation

           The course "Advances in Economics" consists in a series of lectures given by external academics invited at the department. The course has several goals:

- First, it should make you aware of aspects of economics that you have not seen before.
- Second, it serves as an introduction to research by training you to participate in a seminar like activity. So please do not hesitate to ask questions!
- Third, it is a synthesis exercise and a good training for enhancing your writing capabilities.

           Evaluation of the students is made according to the following principle:
Within the three weeks following the last lecture, students should write a report of 3-4 pages either on a part of the lectures they find of particular interest or by summarising the whole approach. This report should reflect the students' work on the subject and will include considerations about the articles recommended in the reading.
Instead of reporting on the lectures, one can choose to summarise one of the articles that the lecturer recommends. In this case, students will highlight the specific contribution of the paper, mention its limits and conclude with the hints it provides for future research. In other words, this exercise is quite similar to the writing of a referee report.
Each student should make both type of exercises at least once in the year. Students may pair themselves for the writing of the report.

           In principle, your reports will be reviewed by the lecturers. For this reason, submission is to be made electronically. Moreover, a database is built with the best reports. In addition to give a major visibility to your work, it should compose an (hopefully) interesting collection of major articles' "long summary".
Submission will require a previous step: to produce a pdf document. In order to do so, print your document as a postscript file by selecting the option "print to file" on a poscript printer.
